Symantec and Lotaris™ (formerly called Lighthouse Information Technologies) Join Forces to Secure Mobile Users
Virgin Mobile the First to Offer Customers Downloadable Security Solution
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, – 12 October 2007 – Symantec today announced a partnership with Lighthouse Information Technologies (now Lotaris™) to provide a mobile security service for cellular phone service providers. Virgin Mobile in South Africa is the first provider to take on the new offering, which will see Symantec’s mobile anti-virus software made available for download directly on to mobile devices.
As part of a two-year agreement between Lighthouse and Symantec, Norton Smartphone Security will be available to users, backed by Symantec Security Response. “With the threat landscape changing continually, mobile phone users need to be confident that they are
protected from threats from the moment they buy their new device,” said John Leahy, Consumer Regional Manager Africa for Symantec.
Norton Smartphone Security protects mobile devices from threats transmitted via email and multimedia messaging services (MMS); downloaded from memory cards, the cell network and Wi-Fi; transmitted by Bluetooth, or beamed over infrared connections. The Symantec LiveUpdate Wireless service automatically updates threat protection signatures to ensure protection against new viruses, Trojans and worms. With AutoProtect which provides real-time protection by running continuously in the background, cellphones are safeguarded as soon as the software is installed.
“Our decision to partner with Lighthouse is based on the strategic business fit of both organisations,” said Leahy. “Lighthouse operates specifically in the mobile space and therefore understands the complexity of delivering such a solution to the market.” David Keast, Managing Director of Lighthouse Information Technologies, said: “Our partnership with Symantec, a world leader in security software, coupled with our solid track record in building telecommunications and technology assets in Africa gives us a good reach into the African market. Mobile phone users will have a protection solution that is automated, powerful and easy to understand and use.”
